“Crunches and ab exercises burn belly fat.”
Moderate confidence. A controlled trial of abdominal exercises found no abdominal-fat reduction, while one very small 2023 trial reported a modest localized effect from high-volume abdominal endurance work added to aerobic exercise. The overall evidence does not support crunches as a reliable way to selectively lose belly fat.
Crunches strengthen and train the abdominal muscles, but typical ab programs do not reliably remove the fat covering them. One small trial suggests a possible local effect under a demanding protocol, but meaningful belly-fat loss still depends mainly on overall fat loss.
Abdominal exercise and abdominal-fat loss are different outcomes. Stronger abs can improve function without changing waist fat, and aerobic or resistance exercise can reduce abdominal fat through whole-body effects.
Safety note: High-volume trunk flexion or rotation can aggravate back, hip or abdominal symptoms in some people. Exercise should be modified for pain, pregnancy, recent surgery or hernia concerns.
Talk to a healthcare professional if: Seek guidance for persistent back or abdominal pain, a suspected hernia, recent abdominal surgery, or symptoms that worsen with core exercise.
Keep core work for strength, stability and performance. Do not rely on it as your main fat-loss method or expect it to choose where most fat comes off.
Combine core training with full-body activity, strength training and an eating pattern that supports your overall goal. Track waist or body-composition trends over months, not the burn from one ab session.
