“Finasteride can slow loss and regrow some hair in men with androgenetic alopecia.”
Moderate confidence. Randomized-trial reviews show improved hair counts and appearance in men with androgenetic alopecia, but response varies, many studies are older or industry-linked, and evidence is weaker for women, topical preparations and other causes of hair loss.
For male pattern hair loss, oral finasteride usually works better at slowing further loss than restoring a full head of hair, but some men gain measurable density. It does not treat every cause of shedding or scarring hair loss.
Hair follicles respond slowly. Benefit is judged over months and generally fades after treatment stops. Diagnosis matters because sudden, patchy or inflamed hair loss follows a different path.
Safety note: Finasteride can cause sexual adverse effects in a minority of users. Tablets that are crushed or broken should not be handled by someone who is or may be pregnant because exposure can harm development of a male fetus. It also lowers PSA and can affect interpretation of prostate screening.
Talk to a healthcare professional if: Get an evaluation for sudden, patchy, painful, inflamed or rapidly progressive loss, or loss with systemic symptoms. Discuss sexual symptoms, fertility plans, depression history, pregnancy exposure and prostate screening before or during treatment.
Expect preservation or modest regrowth, not guaranteed restoration, and weigh that benefit against adverse effects and long-term use.
Confirm androgenetic alopecia, take baseline photos under the same lighting and review response and side effects after an appropriate trial with the prescriber.
