The claim

“Hydrogen water improves health by reducing inflammation.”

False
Evidence confidence Limited
The short answer

Hydrogen water has not been shown to improve health by reducing inflammation; the evidence is limited to small changes in lab markers.

What this means for you

No study has shown that hydrogen water makes people healthier by calming inflammation, so it is not worth paying extra for that reason. It hydrates you like any other water.

Your next step

If you buy hydrogen water, buy it because you like it, not for an anti-inflammation benefit.

The evidence
Why this confidence?

Small human trials report changes in some immune-cell and gene-activity lab markers, but key blood markers of oxidative stress did not differ from plain water, and no trial has shown that people get healthier. The studies are few, small and short and use different products, so confidence is limited.

The facts

Hydrogen water has not been shown to improve health by reducing inflammation; the evidence is limited to small changes in lab markers. In a 4-week trial of 38 healthy adults, it did not change the main blood tests of oxidative stress compared with plain water.

The bigger picture

In that same trial, inflammation-related gene activity in blood cells was lower with hydrogen water, but that is a lab marker, not a sign that people became healthier. Small trials in people with conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis report some symptom or marker changes, but they are short, small and often give hydrogen as a gas or infusion rather than as water, so they are hard to compare. Reviews of human hydrogen-water studies call the results preliminary.
