“Vaginal probiotics can help prevent recurrent bacterial vaginosis.”
A placebo-controlled trial found fewer BV recurrences with one defined L. crispatus formulation after antibiotic treatment. This supports a product-specific benefit, but one formulation and limited follow-up cannot establish the same effect for every probiotic or long-term use.
One trial found that a specific vaginal L. crispatus product reduced BV recurrence after metronidazole: about 30% had recurrence by 12 weeks versus 45% with placebo. Both groups first received antibiotics. These results do not apply automatically to store-bought probiotics.
Safety note: Do not use recurrence-prevention evidence to self-treat an active infection. Returning symptoms need reassessment, especially during pregnancy.
Talk to a healthcare professional if: If symptoms return, confirm the cause with a clinician and review prevention options after treatment.
The exact product and treatment sequence matter. A supplement listing the same species may not match the formulation tested in the trial.
If BV keeps returning, ask your clinician about prevention options and what evidence supports any proposed product.
