“GMO foods cause allergies.”
Strong confidence because the National Academies review, the WHO and the FDA found no evidence that marketed GMO foods cause more allergy than comparable foods, and pre-market allergen screening is designed to catch transfer problems, as it did for the Brazil-nut soybean, which was never sold. Each new trait still needs case-by-case assessment.
Assessed GMO foods are not shown to be more allergy-causing than comparable non-GMO foods. A person with soy allergy still needs to avoid relevant soy products whether they are GMO or not. The allergenic protein, not the label, is what matters.
An experimental soybean containing a Brazil-nut protein triggered allergy tests in Brazil-nut-allergic people, and it was not commercialized. It shows why pre-market allergen screening exists, not that supermarket GMO foods generally cause new allergies.
For someone with a food allergy, a small exposure can matter. Ordinary dose-based reassurance must not override their allergen precautions.
Safety note: Read allergen labels. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, throat swelling or other signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Talk to a healthcare professional if: Get recurring reactions evaluated instead of assuming GMO status is the cause.
Avoid your actual allergen rather than an entire production category.
Use the ingredient and allergen information when choosing food.
