The claim

“Grounding or earthing improves your health.”

Not enough evidence
Evidence confidence Limited

Limited confidence. Published studies are small, often unblinded, short-term and frequently written by advocates or people linked to grounding products. Independent replication with meaningful clinical outcomes is lacking.

The facts

Grounding or earthing has not been shown to prevent or treat disease, improve sleep reliably or reduce inflammation in a clinically meaningful way. Feeling better while barefoot outdoors may reflect nature, movement, attention and expectation rather than electrical contact with Earth.

The bigger picture

“Grounding” also means a psychological technique for orienting attention during distress, which is unrelated to electrical earthing mats. Product marketing often blurs these distinct ideas.

Who should be careful?

Safety note: Barefoot walking can cause cuts, burns, infection or falls. Risk is higher with diabetes, neuropathy, poor circulation or immune compromise. Improper electrical products or wiring can create shock or fire hazards.

Talk to a healthcare professional if: Seek care for nonhealing foot wounds, infection or burns, and discuss barefoot activity if you have neuropathy or poor circulation. Persistent pain, insomnia or inflammation symptoms deserve diagnosis rather than grounding as a substitute.

What this means for you

Enjoy safe barefoot time or nature if you like it, but do not buy a grounding product expecting proven medical benefits or use it instead of treatment.

Your next step

For relaxation, choose a safe outdoor activity or an evidence-based sleep or stress strategy. If considering a mat, do not connect improvised wiring to an outlet or plumbing.
