The claim

“HBOT slows aging, improves brain function, and speeds recovery in healthy people.”

Not enough evidence
Evidence confidence Limited

Limited confidence. Small studies in selected older adults report changes in cognition or aging biomarkers, but protocols are intensive, replication is limited and surrogate changes do not prove slower aging, longer life or general recovery benefits.

The facts

Medical HBOT is real, but anti-aging, cognitive-enhancement and general-recovery claims for healthy people are not established. Evidence from a specific older or impaired group cannot be generalized to every healthy user.

The bigger picture

Clinical HBOT uses hard-sided chambers, prescribed oxygen, defined pressure and medical supervision. “Mild” chambers and wellness sessions may not deliver the same intervention studied for medical indications.

Who should be careful?

Safety note: HBOT can cause ear or sinus barotrauma, temporary vision changes, oxygen toxicity and rarely lung injury. Oxygen-rich chambers create a serious fire hazard when instructions and prohibited-item rules are not followed.

Talk to a healthcare professional if: HBOT should be prescribed and supervised by a qualified medical team. Discuss lung disease, ear or sinus problems, seizures, pregnancy, implanted devices and medicines before treatment, and seek care for chest pain, breathing trouble or neurologic symptoms after a session.

What this means for you

Do not treat an expensive course of HBOT as a proven longevity or performance intervention. Biomarker changes are not the same as better health or longer life.

Your next step

If you are considering HBOT without an established indication, ask for the exact trial matching your population, protocol and outcome, plus the facility's medical oversight and emergency procedures.

Bottom line on Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)

If you have one of the specific approved medical conditions, HBOT has real evidence behind it and is worth discussing with your doctor; if you're a healthy person being pitched anti-aging or cognitive-enhancement sessions at a wellness clinic, that's a considerably less certain bet.
