The claim

“Intermittent fasting is better for weight loss than a regular calorie-controlled diet.”

Mostly false
Evidence confidence Moderate

Moderate confidence because a current Cochrane review and a large network meta-analysis of randomized trials find little or no clinically important weight-loss advantage over continuous calorie restriction. Some intermittent schedules may suit preferences, but superiority is not established.

The facts

Intermittent fasting generally produces similar weight loss to a conventional calorie-restricted approach. It is one way to organize eating, not a reliably superior method.

The bigger picture

Methods include time-restricted eating, alternate-day fasting and whole-day fasting, so results are not interchangeable. A 2025 network meta-analysis found a small short-term advantage for alternate-day fasting, but the difference was below its threshold for clinical importance and longer trials were limited.

Who should be careful?

Safety note: Fasting can cause hunger, headache or dizziness and may be unsafe without clinical guidance during pregnancy, with an eating-disorder history, in children or frail adults, or when diabetes medicines can cause hypoglycemia.

Talk to a healthcare professional if: Get individualized advice before fasting if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have diabetes, take glucose-lowering or blood-pressure medicine, have an eating-disorder history, are underweight or frail, or have a chronic illness affected by meal timing.

What this means for you

An eating window can work if it makes a sustainable calorie deficit easier. Its value comes from fit and adherence, not proven metabolic magic.

Your next step

Choose the pattern you can sustain while meeting nutrition needs. Stop and reassess if fasting causes dizziness, bingeing, medication problems or persistent fatigue.
