“Lifting weights will make women bulky.”
Moderate confidence. Women and men show similar relative muscle-growth responses to resistance training, but the amount and appearance of change vary by program, nutrition, genetics and starting point. Ordinary strength training does not automatically produce a bodybuilding physique.
Lifting can build muscle in women, but substantial size gain generally requires sustained, progressive training and adequate energy intake. Strength, bone and function can improve without an unwanted dramatic change in appearance.
“Bulky” is subjective. Training volume, exercise selection and nutrition can be adjusted toward strength, muscle gain, sport performance or general health.
Safety note: Use loads and technique appropriate to your experience. Progress gradually, and stop for acute pain, chest pain, fainting or severe shortness of breath.
Talk to a healthcare professional if: Seek individualized guidance if you have a recent injury or surgery, unstable heart or lung disease, severe osteoporosis, pregnancy-related restrictions or symptoms with exertion.
You do not need to avoid weights to control your appearance. Muscle gain is gradual enough to monitor, and a program can be changed if it is not matching your goals.
Start with two full-body strength sessions per week and progress gradually. Track strength, function and how you feel rather than assuming a particular body shape will result.
