“Zone 2 cardio is the best exercise for health and longevity.”
Moderate confidence. Zone 2 is a practical way to accumulate aerobic volume, but current evidence does not show it is uniquely optimal for mitochondrial adaptation, cardiometabolic health or longevity. Higher intensities can produce larger fitness gains when time or total training volume is limited.
Zone 2 cardio is useful, but calling it the best exercise for health and longevity overstates the evidence. It is sustainable and helps build aerobic capacity, while harder efforts, strength training and total weekly activity add benefits that Zone 2 alone does not replace.
“Zone 2” can be defined differently across devices and testing methods. Health benefits depend more on total activity, fitness, consistency and a balanced program than on staying in one branded zone.
Safety note: Very intense exercise raises short-term cardiovascular and injury demands. Increase intensity gradually and include recovery, especially if you are new to exercise.
Talk to a healthcare professional if: Seek individualized advice before vigorous training if you have exertional chest pain, fainting, unexplained breathlessness, unstable heart or lung disease, or a recent major medical event.
Use conversational-pace cardio if it helps you exercise consistently. You do not need to make every aerobic session Zone 2 or avoid higher intensities to protect your health.
Build a sustainable mix: regular moderate aerobic activity, some vigorous work if appropriate, and muscle strengthening. Choose duration and intensity that fit your health, goals and recovery.
