The claim

“Hydrogen water hydrates better than regular water.”

False
Evidence confidence Limited
The short answer

Hydrogen water hydrates you as well as regular water, because it is regular water with a small amount of hydrogen gas dissolved in it.

What this means for you

Any safe drinking water you enjoy will keep you hydrated. Paying more for hydrogen water does not buy better hydration.

Your next step

Keep drinking the water that is easiest and cheapest for you. There is no need to switch.

The evidence
Why this confidence?

No study has shown that hydrogen water hydrates people better than plain water, and the only study we found that measured hydration had 10 people and no plain-water group to compare against. No trial has compared hydrogen water with plain water for hydration, so this verdict rests on what is known about its ingredients (hydrogen water is still just water), and confidence is limited because so few studies exist.

The facts

Hydrogen water hydrates you as well as regular water, because it is regular water with a small amount of hydrogen gas dissolved in it. No study has shown that the added hydrogen makes it hydrate you any better.

The bigger picture

One 2026 study gave hydrogen water to 10 volunteers for 21 days and reported more dilute urine and lower blood thickness readings afterward. It had no regular-water group, so it cannot show that hydrogen water beats plain water. A 2024 review of human hydrogen-water studies looked at outcomes like exercise, liver health and aging markers, called the results preliminary, and did not report any hydration advantage.
