The claim

“Ipamorelin helps people lose body fat.”

Not enough evidence
Evidence confidence Insufficient/Conflicting
The short answer

No study in people has tested whether ipamorelin helps with fat loss.

What this means for you

Ipamorelin is an untested fat-loss idea with real safety warnings. If you want medical help with weight loss, there are approved treatments with real trial results.

Your next step

Skip ipamorelin, and if you want help with weight loss, ask your doctor about approved options.

Who should be careful?

Safety note: FDA has flagged a published report of serious side effects, including death, when ipamorelin was given by IV. Injected peptides like ipamorelin may also trigger immune reactions. Ipamorelin is not an approved medicine, and it is banned in sport at all times.

Talk to a healthcare professional if: you are thinking about injecting ipamorelin or another growth hormone peptide for weight loss.

The evidence
Why this confidence?

We found no study in people that measured body fat with ipamorelin. The main human trial tested it for bowel recovery after surgery, so the fat-loss question has not been tested.

The facts

No study in people has tested whether ipamorelin helps with fat loss. The main human trial tested it for bowel recovery after surgery, not fat loss, and it did not show a clear benefit.

The bigger picture

In that 2014 trial, 117 people having bowel surgery got ipamorelin or a placebo by IV twice a day for up to a week. Time to the first tolerated meal was 25.3 hours with ipamorelin and 32.6 hours with placebo, a difference that could have been chance, and the other measures did not differ. Ipamorelin raises growth hormone, and a 2020 review of growth hormone boosters said clinical data on their effects on body composition are largely lacking. Results from other peptide or weight-loss drugs do not carry over to ipamorelin.
